A single vehicle crash along Interstate 85 in Lanett on Thursday evening left a Chambers County man injured and a Georgia woman fatally wounded along the busy roadway just as rush hour was winding down.
According to a release from the Lanett Police Department officials were dispatched to a single vehicle accident near mile maker 74 at 5:53 p.m. EST on the southbound lanes of Interstate 85. Emergency crews were dispatched from Lanett Police, Lanett Fire and EMS, and the Huguley Fire Department.
When first responders arrived at the accident scene they discovered a red Chevrolet Tahoe in the wood line next to the roadway. It appeared the vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a guardrail. Following the collision with the guardrail the vehicle went over the guardrail and struck a tree. Once the vehicle struck the tree it ejected the two occupants of the vehicle.
Lanett Fire and EMS began to treat the victims of the crash when they arrived. They identified the first victim as Jerniski Dorsey, 22-years-old, from Lanett, Alabama. EMS treated Dorsey at the scene before he was airlifted by Life Saver to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia. Police state Dorsey was the driver of the vehicle. Police have not released the condition or extent of the injuries suffered by Dorsey.
A second victim of the crash was the passenger identified as Breanna Harris, 21-years-old, of West Point, Georgia. Harris was also ejected from the vehicle. When emergency personnel arrived, they discovered no signs of life from Harris and she was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The accident is still under investigation by the Lanett Police Department. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Waldrop at (334)644-2146. Police state that both occupants were not using restraints during the accident.
