3rd annual Cancer Walk is Saturday

With October being recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a local group of women, know as the Deztined Divaz, has organized a cancer walk to be held on the courthouse square here in LaFayette on Saturday, October 19.

This will be the third year for the Pacing for a Cure Breast Cancer Walk, and the group is hoping to build upon last year’s success. Club President Janika Ford said that the walk saw significant growth last year and it raised over $1,000. She said this year’s goal is $1,500. “Our goal for the breast cancer walk is to spread the importance of self-checks and to promote understanding of the disease,” Ford said. “People need to understand that if there is a family history, your chances of having this disease increases. Even if this disease has not touched you personally, it may have hit close to home with a family member, friend, coworker or church member. It does not discriminate.”

Ford said that the designated recipient of a portion of the walk’s proceeds would go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.

The groups motto is “Designed for greatness; destined for success!” and this event is one of the biggest days on the calendar for the women.

The group recently received a proclamation from the LaFayette City Council declaring October 19 as Pacing for a Cure Cancer Walk Day in LaFayette.

Registration will be held from 8:15-9:00 am CST in the parking lot across from Farmers and Merchants Bank. The Walk will begin at 9:15 am. Registration forms are also available at LaFayette City Hall, the LaFayette Post Office and The LaFayette Sun office.
