A 5-year-old child is recovering after being injured by gunfire in an east Alabama city on Sunday night. Police are now searching for the person or persons responsible for injuring that child near a public housing complex.

According to information released from the Phenix City Police Department, officers were dispatched to Jack Houghston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City at 8:47 p.m. on Sunday night. Officers were responding to a call regarding a person being shot. When officers arrived, they were astonished to find the victim was a 5-year-old child.

Police indicate at the hospital they spoke with the victim’s mother, who told officers she was taking her child out of her vehicle in the 400 block of Riverview Apartments north of downtown Phenix City on Sunday night when the shooting occurred.
Police note the injuries the child sustained are non-life threatening. The bullet struck the juvenile victim in the left leg. Police have not yet been able to identify the shooter or any suspect in connection to the shooting.

The shooting occurred just blocks from where a 27-year-old female was fatally shot at on Wednesday morning along South Railroad Street in Phenix City.
