The Birmingham Chil-
dren’s Theatre performed
for students of John P.
Powell School on Tuesday,
February19 at 9:30 a.m.
This performance was
funded by a grant from the
Alabama State Council on
the Arts. John P. Powell
Middle School is one of
18 schools in 12 counties
benefiting from the Coun

cil’s statewide Alabama
Touring Artist Program.
The Birmingham Chil-
dren’s Theatre performed
Historic Figures – Bring-
ing History to Life and
the production challenged
the audience and actors
to use their imaginations.
The actor playing George
Washington Carver stayed
“in character” as the story
unfolded. He answered
questions, and interacted
with students throughout
the presentation. All of
the actors used mind,
body and voice to create
characters. During the
student’s question and
answer portion, the actor
playing George Washing-
ton Carver improvised
answers to questions based
on facts he learned in his
research of the character
he plays.
The students enjoyed
the performance and
learned a lot about the
contributions made by
George Washington
Carver.
