Bulldogs pick up big win over Opelika – now 4-0

On Friday night the LaFayette High School Bulldogs basketball teams squared off against the Opelika High School Bulldogs. It was the first time the two teams had played a regular season game against each other in years.

In the girl’s game, Opelika which is known for having a strong and talented girls basketball program, asserted themselves as the aggressor and took control of the game in the first quarter, scoring 21 to LaFayette’s 5.
 
In the second quarter LaFayette was able to match the play of the lady dogs of Opelika. Each team scored 11 points in the quarter. At the halftime break, Opelika would lead the LaFayette Lady Dogs 32-16.
In the third quarter both teams would come out on fire. LaFayette would score 21 points in the quarter, while Opelika scored 20 points.
In the final quarter Opelika would just prove to be just too much for the Lady Dogs, as they would close out the game with a 73-51 victory.

Leading scorers on the night for LaFayette Lady Bulldogs were Faliah Greer with 17 points and Jasmine Pitts with 15 points.
Leading scorers for the Opelika Lady Bulldogs were Claire Worth with 20 points, Alex Browning poured in 17 points, while Quala Walton and Anita Payne added 14 points each.

In the boy’s game it was quite the opposite of the girl’s game.

The young guns for the LaFayette Bulldogs came out and set the tone early.grabbing an early advantage over Opelika, taking a 23-8 first quarter lead. The second would go back and forth, with Opelika scoring 23 points in the quarter and LaFayette scoring 24 points. At the half LaFayette would lead the Opelika Bulldogs by a score of 47-31.

In the third the Young Gunners of LaFayette picked up right where they left off. LaFayette held off an early run by Opelika with their full court pressure defense. LaFayette capitalized on costly turnovers and blown opportunities by Opelika and stretched the lead to 64-48 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was pretty much the same scenario as the first three quarters. The Dogs of LaFayette would close the night out with a 84-73 victory.

The LaFayette Bulldogs leading scorers were Corey Boston with 19 points, Tae Burton had 17 points, Jamarquez Boston-Gaines had 16 points, Jordan Wallace added 12 points, while Markevious Moore scored 11 on the night.

Opelika leading scorers were Trey Boone with 16 points and Austin Pitts poured in 15 points.

The LaFayette Bulldogs are now 4-0 on the season and looking to make some noise in the Alabama Class 2A Division.

On last Thursday, the Bulldogs traveled to Loachapoka for their first basketball game on the road this season.

The Varsity boys and B-team boys were both victorious, while the Varsity girls suffered their first loss of the season.

The B-team game was a blow out as the Dogs annihilated the Indians 40-3.The Dogs led by a score of 28-0 at halftime.

In girls action the Lady Indians were able to hold off a good Lady Bulldogs team and defeated them 46-30.

The Varsity boys picked up their third win of the season over Loachapoka. The Bulldogs cruised past the Indians 60-46.
