LAFAYETTE ON THE VERGE OF NEW INDUSTRY- 12/2/08-LaFayette may be on the verge of realizing something much sought after over the past several years. A new industry.
The Chambers County Commission meeting Monday authorized the expenditure of $150,000 from its economic development bond issue proceeds to assist the Industrial Development Authority of Chambers County in recruiting a new industry, known by the code name of Project G.
Bruce Emfinger of the IDA told commissioners Project G involved a manufacturing company that would employ 75 people and be located in LaFayette.
He asked the commissioners to authorize the $150,000 contingent upon the completion of a project agreement between the commission, the IDA and the company.
The motion to provide the funds was approved unanimously.
Commissioner Debbie Wood asked if the project agreement would specifically address the hiring of Chambers County residents by the company. Emfinger said that would be part of the agreement.
IDA officials are not in a position to talk about the nature of the new business as to a time frame for releasing more information.
The City of LaFayette is working with the IDA and the commission on the project. At its last meeting, the LaFayette City Council authorized Mayor Matt Hurst to sign the necessary documents to secure financing to purchase the necessary real estate for Project G.
