Cusseta man, out on bond, charged with second murder


It only took a matter of
days for police in nearby
Auburn, Alabama to make
an arrest in a triple shoot

ing last weekend that
left two men dead and a
woman wounded. The
suspect in the case is from
a nearby community and
was on bond for another
murder in Auburn slightly
over one year ago.
According to Auburn

day August 23, 2018.
Auburn Police indicate
that their investigation
revealed evidence that
showed Newell may have
been responsible for the
death of Torbert, a native
of Tuskegee, Alabama.
Police have no yet con-
nected Newell to the death
of Key, but indicate the
investigation is still ongo-
ing and additional charges
are possible.
Newell was taken
into custody by authorities
and transported to the Lee
County Detention Facility
in Opelika. He was grant

ed a bond of $150,000 for
the char
ges related to the
murder of Torbert. Police
also indicate that Newell
was out on bond for the
July 30, 2017 murder of
Anthony Jamal Davis,
of Auburn. The bond for
that murder case has now
been revoked and New

ell remains in custody.
