A traffic accident turned deadly following a January 5th crash in Columbus, Georgia that would claim the life of an east Alabama State Representative. Police in Columbus made an arrest last week in relationship to the deadly crash that claimed the life of Opelika native George Bandy.
According to Columbus Police, officers arrested Michael Brooks, 60 of Columbus, Ga in relationship to the January 5th crash on Andrews Road near the intersection of 23rd Avenue in Columbus. Police suspect that Brooks made an illegal U-turn in his Dodge Ram pickup truck that caused the fatal crash.
The vehicle driven by Bandy struck that of Brooks. Bandy sustained severe injuries in the crash and was immediately transported to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus for treatment. He would later be moved to Navient Healthcare in Macon, Ga where he died of his injuries on January 16th.
On February 1st Columbus Police obtained arrest warrants for Brooks. He was taken into custody at his home last Wednesday. Brooks was charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle, driving while license suspended, improper U-turn, false information, and no proof of insurance. He was booked into the Muscogee County Jail.
