Handy Cemetery seeks spot on
National Historic Registry
A cemetery located
in LaFayette is moving
forward with an effort
to get it placed on the
National Registry of
Historic Places. An ap-
proval by the LaFayette
city council last week is
helping to push the effort
forward as hopes to get
the cemetery added to
the registry in the next
several months.
A blessing by the
LaFayette city council
gives the cemetery com-
mittee the power to move
forward with submitting
documentation to get
the Handy Cemetery
in LaFayette added to
the National Historic
Registry.
Once added to the
registry a historic marker
will be added to the
cemetery. That marker
will take between 3-6
months to get produced
according to information
disclosed by city coun-
cilman Toney Thomas
during last Thursday’s
city council meeting.
However, before
moving forward with
that action a letter that is
being drafted and will be
sent out to the National
Registry of Historic
Places to get the Handy
Cemetery added. After
that has been approved
then the cemetery can
move forward with get-
ting the historic marker
added to its grounds.
