The softball season has come to an end for the CA Lady Rebels. Their bid for a 2017 state championship fell short with losses to Sumter Academy and Southern Academy during the 1A state softball tournament held Friday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. The Lady Rebels have nothing to hang their heads about. Being named area champs and even making it to the state championship after losing 4 key seniors last year was big. Coach Brandi Fuller had nothing but positives to say after the game “I’m so proud of the girls. Nobody thought we would make it this far after last year, so what they accomplished as area champs and a state tournament appearance was great! We will miss seniors, Kristina and Lindsey Stewart next year”.
In game one the ladies faced the Sumter Academy Eagles from York, Al. Chloe Mitcham started in the circle for the Rebels with McKensie Barnes coming in in relief late in the game. The 1st inning was tough as the ladies allowed Sumter to score 3 runs. Coach Fuller stated “We just couldn’t hit like we’ve been doing”. Kelsey Oliver led the team going 1-2 with an RBI and scoring 1 run. Barnes went 1-3 , also scoring 1 run. Jessica Holliday, Olivia Williams and Britten Stephens also had hits in the loss which ended in a final score of 10-2.
The Rebels next faced the Southern Academy Cougars from Greensboro, AL. Trouble started early as the Rebels gave up 8 runs in the first inning. Although they battled and came back with runs of their own the Rebels weren’t able to surpass the Cougars resulting in a loss of 16-7. Kristina Stewart and Chloe Mitcham both went 1-2 at the plate with Mitcham driving in a run. McKensie Barnes went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. Tori Harmon was 1-3 with a RBI and Kelsey Oliver and Jessica Holliday each were 1-4 in the loss.
The Lady Rebels finished the season with an overall record of 11-10.
