The Lanett Panthers defeated rival LaFayette High School and non-area
Russell County High School over the weekend. The win over the Bulldogs gavethe Panthers the Class 2A, Area 8 regular season title.
Lanett is currently 5-0 in Area 8 while LaFayette stands at 5-2, their two loses coming via Lanett.
The Panthers are 9-0 at home this season against LaFayette on Friday that Area 8 title still seemed up for grabs after the Bulldogs took an early 13-8 advantage after the first quarter.
The second and third quarters however, tell the tale. The Panthers wouldoutscored the Bulldogs 27-8 and 19-9 during the next two periods to take a huge lead.
Lanett only allowed LaFayette a single point during the fourth quarter.
LaFayette junior guard JaTarvious Whiltow managed to score a team high 14 points. Anquavious Pollard tallied a game high 15 points, while Jalen Madden scored 13 points. Freshman point guard Tye Truitt added seven points for the Panthers against Russell County on Saturday, the Panthers started the game better offensively than on Friday night. Lanett would get an early lead and hold on to defeat the Warriors 88-60.
Tavaris Geiger scored 16 points and Truitt scored 15 points while Madden and Pollard each added 13 points, respectively. The win was the Panthers’ 20th of the season (to four loses).
“It was a tremendous team effort, excellent defensive effort to hold LaFayette to a point during the fourth quarter,” said Lanett coach Richard Carter.
In regards to the 26- point victory over Russell County he said, “When we get outer running game going we can be hard to beat.”
