Mr. Lee
Benny Ray Lee, 83, of Opelika, passed peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 12:12 p.m. at Bethany House in Auburn. He was born on February 10, 1934, in Sycamore, Alabama to John L. Lee and Margaret Ruth Smelley. Benny Ray had 4 siblings who preceded him in death: Jimmy Lee, Leon Lee, Thomas Lee, and Anita Lee Cable.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor Faye (Thompson) Lee of Lanett, Alabama whom he married on June 2, 1956. Also surviving are his three daughters: Abbey Lee, Linda Lee Drummond (David), and Benita Lee Owens (David) ; four grandchildren: Maggie Monroe, Jordan Drummond, Mallory Jane Drummond and Ben Owens; and one good dog, Buster.

Friends of Benny Ray knew him as “BR”. He grew up in LaFayette, Alabama, but was a long time resident of Opelika. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1953 to September 1955. After the service he joined the “Phone Company” and retired after 42 years of service.

In his retirement years, he spent his time deer hunting, watching Auburn football and Braves baseball. He enjoyed gardening and could plant a dead stick and make it grow. He had a knack for building bird houses out of most anything, but mostly gourds and wine corks which decorate the yards and homes of family and friends. He loved his family with his whole heart and took many trips and outings with his kids and grandkids. But some of the best times were just sitting on the front porch having a Mike’s Hard Lemonade at his daughter’s house where the family would frequently gather.

Benny Ray lived a full and joyous life and always had a good time no matter what he was doing. He did not want his family to mourn his death but celebrate his life. So, at a later time, the family will do just that and remember the great man that was Husband, Daddy, and Granddaddy and loved so very much and will be greatly missed.

The family respectfully request, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bethany House in Auburn or to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
