By Ashley Oliver

The Chambers Academy Rebels just completed basketball season yet practice is in full swing in preparation for Baseball and Softball season.  With opening day only a week away baseball head coach, Dillon NesSmith, and head softball coach, Brandi Fuller, have only a week to practice with a full team.   Both Rebel teams finished the 2017 season as Area Champs with the Lady Rebels going on to compete in the state tournament.

Dillon NesSmith takes on the role of head coach this season after having served in the assistant coach position previously.  Matt Mims will fill the role of Assistant Coach for the varsity baseball team. This year’s baseball team features 6 seniors; Gavin White, Bubba Ansbro, Cole Donner, Blake Sheppard, Matthew Keebler and newcomer, Luke Davis. White, who is a Northwest Florida commit finished last year’s season with a .327 batting average and was the recipient of the Rebel Award. White also brings experience to the mound as this year’s starting pitcher.  Davis will also see his fair share of time on the mound as will Junior, Nick Harmon, and Sophomore, Cayden Smoot, who started several games last season as a Freshman.

The Lady Rebels return 5 seniors; Kelsey Oliver, McKensie Barnes, Jossie Daniel, Jessica Holiday and Tori Harmon.  Oliver, who signed to play at the next level with Central Alabama Community College, led last year’s team with a .456 batting average; scoring 27 runs and earning 25 RBI’s.  She was selected as an AISA all-star for softball as well as being named Captain, Best Defensive Player and Best Offensive Player for the 2017 season. McKensie Barnes returns as the starting pitcher for the Lady Rebels. Barnes, in the lead off position, scored 38 runs and finished the season with a .400 batting average. Sophomore, Olivia Williams and 8th grader, Chloe Mitcham will also see time in the circle.

The Rebels’ season opener will be played at home on Tuesday, February 13 beginning at 3:30 against Macon-East.  The varsity baseball game will be a double header while both the JV and Varsity softball teams will play.
