The reigning 1A state champion, Chambers Academy Rebels, defeated Wilcox Academy 36-13, earning a trip to Troy University to play Southern Academy for this years 1A state championship.
It was cold, wet, and Muddy on Torbert Field Friday night as the Rebels hosted Wilcox. The elements couldn’t contain the fire the Rebels possessed as they took the field. Everyone knew what was at stake; especially after just barely winning in the final seconds against Jackson the previous week. The Rebels were prepared for a fight, a fight to earn the right to defend their title in Troy.
Offensively, Payton Allen, was 8 for 13 passing for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns to Josh Holliday and Braxton Allen. Payton Allen also rushed for 182 yards on 20 quarterback keepers scoring twice. Braxton Allen picked up 11 yards rushing and scored once. Gavin Kite also scored once on a recovery.
Defensively, Dean Sheffield led the team with 11 tackles followed by Dijon Darden with 8. Jake Waldrop and Braxton Allen each had 7 and Jacob Oliver, Payton Allen, Gavin Kite and Hayden Hurst each had 5.
“What a terrible night for football, but what a great night for CA”, stated head coach, Jason Allen. “I thought our guys rose to the occasion and our big game experience paid off. Our guys know how to win, plain and simple. Every time they step on the field they expect to win, and that’s half the battle. We played really good upfront against a team that was also really good upfront. I thought our guys dominated on the line of scrimmage and that was the difference in the game. Our guys embraced the elements and played with passion and conviction in a game with an awful lot at stake.”
The Rebels will make their 5th consecutive state championship appearance on Friday, November 22nd, when they face Southern Academy at 12:00 noon at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the Troy University Campus. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance through the school. All advanced ticket sales benefit Chambers Academy. Make plans to cheer the Rebels on as they defend their state title.
