While the underground natural gas pipeline being constructed by Sabal Trail is expected to bring substantial economic benefit to the East Alabama area, the Southern Union Foundation is also reaping benefits from the project.

Sabal Trail recently made a $50,000 donation to the Southern Union Foundation’s scholarship fund to provide scholarship opportunities for students who will effectively contribute to the workforce of East Alabama and to the energy industry.

“We want to partner with and invest in the communities along the pipeline route as much as possible. We see a need for more skilled workers, and providing educational opportunities for potential workers can only bolster community vitality,” commented Andrea Grover, Director of Stakeholder Outreach for Sabal Trail.
The Sabal Trail Transmission natural gas pipeline originates in Alabama, stretches through Georgia and terminates in Florida and, at completion, will be approximately 515 miles in length. Roughly 86 of those miles are located in Alabama. The current study corridor affects four counties in Alabama, including Tallapoosa, Chambers, Lee and Russell Counties.

“We are so appreciative of the donation and look forward to a long, strong relationship with Sabal Trail. We plan to award the first scholarships from this money later this year so that our students can start benefitting from it as early as spring semester,” said Shondae Brown, Director of Public Relations at Southern Union.

The Southern Union Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was established to support and foster the educational and service programs and activities of Southern Union State Community College and to increase educational access for students through financial support. Leaders from throughout the Southern Union service area voluntarily serve on the Foundation Board to secure appropriate sources of external funding through donations, planned giving, and scholarships.

The College does not rely on the Foundation for operational needs. However, the work of the Foundation fosters strong partnerships between the College and the community.
