Smash and grab robbers target jewelry store


A duo of robbers took
aim at a business in a
popular East Alabama
shopping mall on Monday
afternoon. The robbery
that started at the mall
led to a day of intense
situations in Auburn on
Monday evening as offi

cers conducted a manhunt
for two suspects in the
case. Both suspects were
apprehended within hours
of the robbery.
Around 3:30 p.m. on
Monday police responded
to the Auburn Mall locat-
ed at 1600 Opelika Road
in Auburn in response to a
call of a theft in progress.
Officers learned that two
male suspects had entered
a business at the mall and
smashed a case making
off with several jew-elry items that were taken
from two display cases at
the business.
When officers had ar

rived the two suspects had
fled the scene, but officers
were given a descrip

tion of a suspect vehicle.
Within minutes police had
located the vehicle and
were able to apprehend
33-year-old Markel Jason
McDaniel of Montgom

ery, Alabama. The other
suspect fled the scene.
Around 5:30 p.m. of-
ficers received a call of
a suspicious individual
standing near the Sam’s
Club store on Bent Creek
Road in Auburn. Sev-
eral officers from various
agencies converged on
the store and located a
suspect who fled the scene
on foot running towards
Interstate 85. That suspect
was taken into custody
after a brief foot chase
and has been identified as
Tremayne Pendleton, 27,
also of Montgomery.
The two men were
arrested and taken to the
Lee County Detention
Facility. Pendleton was
charged with theft of
property first degree and
fleeing and attempting to
elude police. McDaniel
was booked on charges to
include theft of property
first degree. McDaniel
was also being held on
charges of parole viola

first-degree burglary in
Auburn Police are
still searching for a third
suspect in the case and ask
