A Farewell Celebration Show will be held at the Buffalo Arana on August 19, beginning at 11 a.m.

The show is the swansong for Calvin and Betty Veal, the husband and wife team who have been sponsoring horse shows at their home arena since 1978.

The two have decided that it’s time to hang up their spurs and would love for anyone who has participated or attended any of their shows to come out for the grand finale at Buffalo Arena.

Calvin Veal, one of the two founding members of the Alabama Open Horseman’s Association and key member in the East Alabama Horseman Association (EAHA), said this will be his sixth horse show this year, and that typically he hosts seven, and sometimes eight or nine shows a year.

His last show on June 17th had 448 entries in several different categories. There were 75 riders and over 100 spectators. Veal expects more for this show.

The bride, Summer Graves Humphry is led by her mother, Ellen Graves Foreman who trained with the Olympic equestrian team. This picture was in the early 80’s. Summer, her mother and son have all shown horses there.

The past several years, Veal has had Chambers Academy students volunteer their time to help run the shows. After expenses are paid out, Veal split the profits from each show with Chambers. It was a win-win said Veal. Chambers received thousands of dollars over the years, and Veal received volunteers to help run the labor intensive shows.

Veal’s shows have benefited a variety of groups beyond Chambers Academy, however. Over the years Handley Band Boosters, Rock Mills Volunteer Fire Dept., LaFayette Jaycees, Girl’s Ranch, Faith Missions Ministries and EAHA Youth Club have all received funds from the Buffalo Arena Show.

The EAHA encourages all who have been a part of the Buffalo Arena to attend this final show and pay their respects to Calvin and Betty, who have done more for youth horsemanship in East Alabama than anyone.
