LAFAYETTE — Learning didn’t stop when school let out at Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School. Instead, students embraced an exciting summer filled with academic growth, encouragement and fun through the school’s “Wild About Learning” summer math and reading camp.
The summer camp was designed to support students who were performing below benchmark in reading, mathematics or both. Its primary goal was to strengthen foundational skills, build academic confidence, and help prevent the “summer slide” — the learning loss that can occur during the summer months.
Throughout the program, students received instruction from certified teachers in small-group settings, allowing each child to receive individualized attention and targeted support based on their unique learning needs. Teachers carefully monitored student progress, adjusted instruction to promote continued growth and created engaging lessons that made learning both meaningful and enjoyable.
In addition to strengthening reading and math skills, students participated in hands-on learning activities that encouraged collaboration, teamwork and problem-solving. The positive learning environment motivated students to challenge themselves while celebrating each academic milestone along the way.
The camp’s theme, “Wild About Learning,” perfectly reflected the excitement and enthusiasm shared by both students and educators throughout the summer. Classrooms were filled with interactive lessons, creative activities and smiles as students discovered that learning can be both rewarding and fun.
The final day of camp concluded with a joyful celebration recognizing the students’ hard work and academic accomplishments. The festivities included music, dancing, games and exciting activities that allowed students to celebrate their progress with classmates, teachers and staff.
Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School’s Summer Math & Reading Camp served as a shining example of the school’s commitment to student success by providing meaningful opportunities for academic growth, confidence-building and continued learning beyond the traditional school year. As students head into the new school year, they do so better prepared, more confident and truly “Wild About Learning.”
