Chambers Academy routs Crenshaw 41-0

LAFAYETTE — Chambers Academy mixed up its offense and stayed dominating on defense as they hosted Crenshaw Christian Friday, Sept. 5.
“I think we’re getting better as a team,” Chambers Academy head coach Jason Allen said. “We were able to throw the ball efficiently and protect the passer. Defensively, we continue to play at a high level and cause turnovers.”
The first offensive and defensive series for the Rebels exemplified these sentiments.
The Rebels opened the game with back-to-back passes from quarterback Braxton Terry. His first target was a first down strike to Bryce Modling. Then, he found tight end Hunter Andrews for a 17 yard gain. Chambers capped off the drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Tilley. Cohan McDonald added the extra point to give the Rebels an early 7-0 lead.
The defense forced a turnover on downs, only allowing three yards on the Cougars’ first possession. The offense then went back to work. Colton Fuller picked up a 20-yard gain. Cobie Whatley and Christian Terry both added first downs, and Braxton Terry scored on the quarterback keeper. McDonald booted through another point, and Chambers was up 14-0.
Aiden Yerta started off the second quarter with a 25-yard TD run, and McDonald made the score 21-0.
Troy Elliott intercepted the ball on the Cougars’ next drive, giving Chambers a short field for their next drive. Braxton Terry found Tilley once again to take the Rebels into the red zone, and Yerta added the 13-yard TD run on the next play. McDonald added another extra point to give Chambers a 28-0 lead.
Just as time was running out in the first half, Braxton Terry hit Modling on a 40-yard strike for another TD. McDonald added the point after to give Chambers a 35-0 lead, heading into the locker room at the half.
Cooper Earl and Hunter Phillips traded carries on the opening drive of the second half, with Phillips punching in the TD.
The defense was the star of the second half, with Collin Whatley making two critical pass break-ups, the Rebels forcing a fumble and Caleb Caulfield sacking the quarterback to end the Cougars’ last drive and give the Rebels the 41-0 win.
“We have to continue to get better fundamentally each week to become the kind of team we want to be by the end of the season,” Allen said.
Braxton Terry was 8-for-11 through the air for 131 yards. Aiden Tilley was his favorite target with four for 76 yards.
Colton Fuller once again led the Rebel defense with seven tackles. A.J. Noles and Sam Stockman followed with five tackles each. Knox Moncus added four tackles and one tackle for a loss.
Chambers hits the road to face non-region opponent No. 4 Hooper Academy (2-1) at Davis Henry Field on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m.
“Hooper is a much improved team,” Allen said. “They have good speed and like to throw it around, so we will have to be in the right places and make tackles. We are looking forward to it.”
