CHAMBERS COUNTY — The Chambers County School Board recognized Representative Debbie Wood during its Oct. 30 meeting through a photo presentation showcasing her impact in Chambers County schools, a video of students thanking Wood for assisting with funding different student organizations and comments from principals regarding her impact in the schools overall. The school board also presented Wood with a gift basket with contributed items from different Chambers County schools, along with a certificate of appreciation.
“Thank you superintendent and all the board members for today, you’ve got me in my feelings, so I’m going to try to hold this together,” Wood said. “I never knew the power of the purse that a representative holds until I got a call from a teacher at Bob Harding-Shawmut Elementary, where my children attended. It was Mary Yates, and she said, ‘I am so tired of my students going from the academic building to the gym and getting wet. Can you please find me some money to cover this area?’ And I thought, ‘why hadn’t I thought of that?’ So I found $10,000 and we covered that area for the first time. And every time I would go back and look at that I thought it’s so important that we know the needs in our community. I’ve been blessed — and I would be remiss without saying, ‘Thank you’ to you and to the teachers that show up every day with passion and purpose.”
