CHAMBERS COUNTY — At the Feb. 18 Chambers County School Board Meeting, the board recognized previous Chambers County Board of Education African American employees and Career Technical Education Month.

“During Black History Month, we pause to honor the black educators and support staff who have served as the heartbeat of our school district and strive to lift our students up and celebrate their potential successes,” said Chambers County Schools Director of Testing Fran Groover. “These dedicated professionals did far more than provide instruction, organization, meals or safely transport our students; they served as mentors and advocates for our children and worked hard to support the school leaders and their endeavors. Tonight, we want to recognize several people who have made a lasting impact on our school system and our students.”

The board recognized the following employees who played an influential role in educating students in the Chambers County School System:

- Tammy Darden

- Lisa Askew-Fleetion

- LaShae Herring

- JoAnne Magby

- Deborah Stringer

- Rosa Holloway

- Fannie Edwards

- Inez Brooks

- Barbara Smith

Chambers County Career Tech Director Joshua Bryan shared an update on the Career Tech Education (CTE) of Chambers County Students.

“This is CTE Highlight Month, so what I want to do is highlight CTE in Chambers County,” he said. “I’m the brand new career tech director for Chambers County Schools — I started July 1 — but I’m not new to Chambers County Schools or Chambers County. My parents spent 25-30 years in the school system — my dad was a coach and my mom was a special education teacher. And if you’re from Chambers County, I am one of the triplets. I graduated from Valley High School in 2009 and went to Alabama A&M for an agriculture education degree. I actually got offered a teaching job in Huntsville, and I said, ‘Nope, I’m going home to Chambers County.’ I started teaching at Chambers County School — I taught agri-science from 2015 to 2023, taught at Wadley High School last year and then came back home to Chambers County this year, and I’m super excited to be home… We have a total of 11 CTE programs in Chambers County. We have 375 students coming to the Career Tech Center across the road, and we have 709 students enrolled in CTE in our county. We have seven programs at the center, we have two programs at LaFayette High School and we have two programs at Valley High School.”

Superintendent Dr. Sharon Weldon congratulated the Chambers County basketball teams that are competing in the next round of playoffs.

“I’m so very proud and excited that we do still have basketball going on,” she said. “This week, we got the Sweet 16. LaFayette High has already won their Sweet 16, so now they will move on to the Elite Eight.”
