LAFAYETTE — The Chambers Academy girls basketball program opened its season with a busy week on the court, as both the JV and varsity squads faced early tests against Edgewood, Lakeside and a weekend tournament field at Evangel Christian. While the teams saw mixed results, both groups showed flashes of promise, highlighted by strong individual performances and a determined offensive effort from several returning players.

JV Girls

The Chambers JV Girls kicked off their season at Edgewood Academy, falling 29-34 after a big fourth quarter surge led by Addison Tenpenny fell short.

However, the girls bounced back in their next game against Lakeside. McKinley Hendricks hit a three pointer out of the gate to set the tone for the game. Payton Stanford got things rolling in the second quarter with back-to-back swipe-and-scores, and Maddie Howard drained a three to take a 20-8 lead into halftime.

Skylar Andrews knocked down a two to kick off the second half, and Hendricks scored another three pointer to record the 39-15 win.

Varsity Girl

The Chambers Varsity Girls lost a tough 48-49 game to open the season at Edgewood. Then, they struggled against Lakeside in a 39-51 loss

The Lady Rebels played in a round robin tournament at Evangel Christian over the weekend and recorded their first win of the season in a 46-19 victory over Crenshaw. Madison Stanford led the way with 16 points in the game followed by Blakely Allen with 6 and Anna Kate Jackson and MeLeah Tigner with five each

Chambers faced North River the next night. Madison Stanford went straight to the basket with three to start the game and followed up with two more baskets in the first two minutes to give Chambers a quick 7-0 lead, but the Chargers fought back scoring eight unanswered points, and the Lady Rebels trailed 9-15 to end the first.

North River got hot in the second quarter while the Lady Rebels’ offense stalled, falling behind 13-31 at the half.

Blakely Allen and Stanford hit back-to-back shots to start the second half, but Chambers remained inconsistent in the second half and lost 33-46.
