CHAMBERS COUNTY — At the Oct. 6 Chambers County Commission Meeting, District 6 Commissioner Debra Riley said she wants to remind the community that this is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and that community members should consider participating in one of the Breast Cancer Walks or donating to an organization.

Chambers County Probate Judge Paul Story awarded Eurika Ramsey a five years of service award.

“If you've been to the annex at any point in time or received any service, you notice that every time you walk, you can be greeted with a big smile and a good laugh,” Story said. “But we're always very appreciative to Ms. Eurika and the wonderful work she does and keeping them straight in the annex on occasion too, when she has to. But certainly want to thank her for her five years of service and looking forward to many, many more with our probate family.”

LaFayette Fire Chief, Jim Doody, updated the commission on the impact from the Tunnel to Towers visit to Alabama, and shared that the Tunnels to Towers Foundation called him that same day to ask if he would be an organization ambassador.

“We started working on this project in April of last year,” he said. “Was a long time coming, but well worth the blood, sweat and tears that went into it. We were lucky enough to have 6,333 people go through it. We were able to bring in over 1,700 eighth-grade students, students from Opelika High School [and] Southern Unions Campus also provided some students. The organization raised $6,740 in public donations during its visit there, and $3,000 of that came on just Sunday alone. So we had two and a half hours waits on Sunday, couldn't promise anybody a Disney Fast Pass, but sat there for two and a half hours and came out and told me when they exited that they would have sat there for four hours to go through what they did.”

After Doody shared, County Attorney Skip McCoy read a proclamation honoring the work of Chief Doody in bringing the Tunnel to Towers exhibit to Chambers County.

“And whereas the Chambers County Commission hereby seeks to express its appreciation to Chief Doody and all other Chambers County first responders who participated in and assisted in the planning of this memorial event, now therefore be it proclaimed by the Chambers County Commission as follows, that Sept. 11, 2001 will live in the minds and hearts of Chambers County residents and their descendants forever,” McCoy said. “And whereas that the legacy of the Tunnel to Towers 911 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit will be etched in the history of Chambers County, and whereas that extreme appreciation is hereby extended to Chief Doody for his dedication and loyalty for promoting and ensuring safety for the citizens of Chambers County, Alabama.”
