LAFAYETTE — LaFayette Main Street is adding speakers downtown to continue revitalization efforts and liven the square for locals attending events.

“The decision to add speakers downtown came from our desire to continue enhancing the downtown experience and creating a more welcoming atmosphere in our sweet town,” said LaFayette Main Street Executive Director DeAnna Hand. “As LaFayette Main Street continues to invest in placemaking and revitalization efforts, we wanted a way to add energy, character and fun while supporting community events and everyday downtown activity.”

Hand said these speakers are a reflection of the goals of LaFayette Main Street, supporting businesses and a thriving local economy.

“While cities often face challenges related to infrastructure, utilities and other public needs, organizations like Main Street programs are specifically designed to focus on economic development, small business support, tourism, beautification and creating vibrant public spaces,” she said. “These efforts help generate investment, attract visitors, support local businesses and strengthen the local economy. When a downtown is thriving, it can lead to increased private investment, new businesses, job creation and additional tax revenue that ultimately benefits the entire community. Revitalization projects also improve quality of life, create community pride and show residents, visitors and potential investors that a city is moving forward and investing in its future.”

Hand said with steady, consistent growth through events and investment in visitor and resident experience downtown, LaFayette will continue to strengthen and grow.

“Communities cannot afford to wait until every challenge is solved before making progress. Successful towns work on multiple priorities at the same time,” she said. “As a nonprofit, LaFayette Main Street's role is to focus on creating a welcoming, vibrant downtown that supports businesses, attracts visitors and contributes to the long-term success of our town. Every grant secured, event hosted, beautification project completed and business supported is another step toward a stronger LaFayette for everyone.”

Through donor investment and support form partners, Hand said these speakers are included as a part of LaFayette Main Street’s revitalization planning and investment in the Square.

“LaFayette Main Street worked with special donors to offset the cost of purchasing and installing the speakers, allowing us to invest in this enhancement,” she said. “The project also involved coordination with city staff and local partners to determine placement and installation needs.”

As LaFayette Main Street, other organizations and businesses hold events downtown, Hand said the speakers will add to the inviting and exciting atmosphere for visitors and residents alike.

“Music and sound help create an inviting environment that encourages people to linger, shop, dine and enjoy downtown,” she said. “During events, the speakers will improve communication, announcements and entertainment. They help transform public spaces into more vibrant gathering places and create a sense of excitement and community pride.

“Successful downtowns focus on creating experiences. The speakers are another tool that helps make downtown LaFayette more attractive to visitors, potential investors and entrepreneurs. A lively and welcoming atmosphere encourages foot traffic, supports existing businesses and helps showcase downtown as an active destination where people want to spend time.”

Since announcing the speakers and approaching the time to installation, Hand said the community has expressed excitement for the addition downtown.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” she said. “Business owners understand the value of creating an enjoyable downtown experience, and many community members are excited about the additional atmosphere the speakers will bring. People have shared that they look forward to hearing seasonal music, event announcements and enjoying an even more welcoming downtown environment. We are also continuing to educate a few citizens to again understand this is not taxpayer dollars, and we are not the problem solvers of LaFayette's identified challenges related to infrastructure. As a Main Street organization, we value that our work can lead to increased private investment, new businesses, job creation and additional revenue that ultimately benefits the entire community.”

Hand said installation is expected to take place during June, and the speakers will be used both for special events and select times throughout the year to provide seasonal music and enhance the downtown atmosphere.

“The goal is to create an enjoyable experience while remaining mindful of businesses, residents and visitors,” she said. “We are most excited about the opportunities they create to enhance everyday experiences downtown. Whether it's seasonal music during the holidays, background music during festivals or helping support community events, the speakers will add another layer of vibrancy and help create memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.”
