LANETT — Members of the Lambda Zeta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority visited the Lanett Council to demonstrate their appreciation for first responders at the meeting on Monday, March 16. LZO Chapter President Courtney V. Winston stood before the council beside her sorority sisters along with Lanett Fire Chief Matt Shiver and members of his department to address the attendees.
“We have been established for almost 50 years,” she said. “Our chapter was chartered on Oct. 30, 1976, and we always look for ways to honor those who serve such as our organization. This is a dynamic group. They spent MLK with us in January. Thank you first for your service on that day and the service that you do every single day in our community. We know it is a sacrifice and that you do it with joy, peace and the unity that brings us all together. We wanted to honor you today.”
Winston said she is thankful for the dedicated service of Lanett first responders.
“Together we wanted to present your organization with over 700 items for your unit,” she said. “These are personal hygiene items, nonperishable snacks and just something to let you know that we think of you every single day when you are out serving and protecting our community in the great city of Lanett, Alabama. We have a certificate of appreciation for our city of Lanett first responders and EMS.”
Winston said she is thankful for the dedicated service of Lanett first responders.
“From the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, incorporated Lambda Zeta Omega chapter, we extend our sincere appreciation to the dedicated fire and EMS first responders serving the Lanett community,” she said. “Your courage, commitment and willingness to serve and uplift our city every day is commendable, and we are deeply grateful for the sacrifices you make to keep our families intact and our community strong. Thank you so much for all that you do.”
Later on in the meeting Council Member for District 5 Kim Roberts revisited her intention to recognize city of Lanett Parks and Recreation Director Trent McCants for his outstanding efforts in supporting the children that he works with.
“It was a great weekend watching the kids play basketball. Denise, Council Member Bagley and I were in West Point to see Montgomery and LaFayette. It was exciting. After I realized how much Trent had put in to all the work that he had done this weekend, I made up my mind this morning that I was going to get out to get him some sponsorships. When he gets back, he has$600 in sponsorships that will be awarded to him to spend on these kids. We have a wonderful community that is willing to give, and I am so excited to be able to hand him $600 to spend as needed on these kids for the upcoming sports.”
With McCants present at Monday’s meeting, he joined Roberts and Council Member for District 1 Denise Zachery at the front of the chamber. Roberts presented an envelope with donations for his youth program to McCants and addressed him directly.
“Trent, you weren’t here at the last council meeting, but I was so impressed when I came to your tournament in West Point with the children, and I wanted to get out and do something for you. On that Monday after the tournament I found six sponsors that were willing to give you $100 so you have $600 in here to spend on these precious children from the city of Lanett.”
