Lady Bulldogs drop rematch with Notasulga

LAFAYETTE — Despite looking like they would play the role of spoilsport for Notasulga High School’s senior night, LaFayette High School was unable to overcome a persistent Lady Blue Devils team.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-4, 0-3) fell 3-1 to Notasulga (2-6, 2-1) for the second time this season, this time at Obadiah Threadgill Gymnasium on Sept. 21.
After LaFayette won Set 1 25-21, the Lady Blue Devils reeled off three straight winning sets: 25-22 in Set 2, 25-17 in Set 3 and 25-15 in Set 4.
The pivotal moment came toward the very end of the second set. With a 1-0 lead and the potential to go up 2-0, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to seal the deal.
That opened a window of opportunity for Notasulga to grab the game by the horns, which they took. Although LaFayette put up a valiant effort, the Lady Bulldogs appeared to begin to run out of steam after that.
Following the loss, LaFayette head volleyball coach Megan Agee said she appreciated her team’s competitive character and ability to force the Lady Blue Devils deep into each frame.
“I’m always proud of them,” Agee said. “Jakela had a great game today, I think she stepped up big time. We just gave away too many too many points.”
While the result was not what they would have hoped for, the Lady Bulldogs displayed teamwork and cohesion that hid the fact many of them have little to no experience playing volleyball.
“People need to understand that we don’t have a builder program with volleyball, so for a lot of these girls, they’re first- or second-year players,” Agee said.a
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, LaFayette will return to John T. Woody Court to face Class 1A Area 9 foe Wadley High School (8-1, 4-0) at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs are currently the No. 9-ranked team in Class 1A according to MaxPreps.
Agee said she hoped the community would come out and support her three seniors on a special evening intended to honor them.
“My seniors have worked really hard,” Agee said. “I think they deserve to have a crowd there that actually cheers for them and not cheering for another team. We have three this year. One has never played before, and two are returners. They definitely deserve a crowd there for that support.”
