LaFayette churches to host community Ministry Night

LAFAYETTE — Churches across LaFayette and the surrounding areas are uniting next week to bring fellowship, encouragement and free meals directly to the heart of the community.
LaFayette Heights Baptist Church will host its inaugural Ministry Night on Wednesday, Sept. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. CT at The Spot on the Square, located at 17 LaFayette St. S. in downtown LaFayette. Designed as a collaborative outreach event, local congregations will line the downtown sidewalks to share information about their church programs, connect with neighbors and offer free food.
The concept was born out of a desire to create a unified platform where local congregations can serve alongside one another. Rather than hosting an event isolated to a single church campus, organizers envisioned a central, open-air gathering where the entire town feels welcome.
“We’ve tried to spread the word to all the churches around and invite them to come be a part of it,” said Dave Bearden, pastor of LaFayette Heights Baptist Church. “Really, it’s an opportunity for us as churches to express unity and our care for the community and the town.”
Bearden described the setup as functioning much like a community church fair. Participating congregations will set up tables and booths around the perimeter of the square, giving residents the chance to learn about local youth groups, Bible studies and community assistance programs.
In addition to ministry resources, Bearden said participating congregations might offer complimentary food, desserts or drinks to visitors. LaFayette Heights Baptist Church plans to grill and distribute free hot dogs throughout the evening.
Beyond providing a free meal and community connection, the event aims to meet deeper personal needs. Church leaders and volunteers will be available throughout the night to offer prayer, support and conversation to anyone seeking encouragement.
“If there are needs that people have we could pray for them about, or that kind of thing, we’ll be available to do that,” Bearden said. “Really, it’s just a way for us as local churches here in LaFayette to let the town and the community know that we’re here, that we care about them and that we’re here to minister to them and show them the love of Christ.”
For LaFayette Heights Baptist Church, Ministry Night serves as a finale to its seasonal outreach efforts. The church routinely hosts Summer Family Fun Nights on its own campus, but leadership felt led to conclude the season by stepping out into the public square.
“This was kind of the last one, so to speak, for the summer that we were doing, and we wanted it to be more of a mission or an outreach to the community,” Bearden said. “More than anything, we want people to know about Jesus, how they can know Him personally and that He loves them and has a great purpose for their life.”
While this marks the first year for Ministry Night, organizers are hopeful the gathering could lay the groundwork for an annual tradition. Bearden noted that church leadership plans to evaluate the community’s response following Wednesday’s event before determining if it will become a regular fixture on the church’s calendar.
