LAFAYETTE — LaFayette is kicking off the holiday season with its Christmas on the Square on Dec. 13. There will be food and vendors set up in downtown LaFayette from 4 to 8 p.m., and the Christmas parade begins at 6 p.m.

“[The Christmas Committee] brought back doing a Christmas parade several years ago, and we decided to name it Christmas on the Square to kind of have an annual theme so that people could resonate the event with the title of the event,” said LaFayette City Council Member for District A and Christmas Committee member, Emily Milford. “We’ve adjusted a little how we’ve done it through the years, allowing different vendors, food trucks and things like that — and we think we’ve settled on the best way to organize everything.”

Milford said people can purchase food from the food trucks, and shop or get takeout from local businesses — to eat their snacks and treats while they watch the LaFayette Christmas Parade.

“The main attraction of Christmas on the Square is our parade,” she said. “We are [still] taking applications, [and applying is] free. So, pretty much anyone that’s interested in having a float or a vehicle, whether it’s for their business, church or school — we have a range of parade entries every year, and there is a link on our Facebook page [LaFayette Christmas Committee] that you can sign up on… The parade is the main thing for Christmas on the Square, but we do have some food vendors, and our local shops and eateries are also going to stay open and have some extended hours.”

Be merry and join with neighbors to enjoy Christmas on the Square. Milford said the day will be an opportunity to spend time with family and friends while celebrating the holiday season.

“The parade always draws a big crowd,” she said. “We have people from all over the community who participate — so it always draws a big crowd of family members that come out to see not only their family members in the parade, but to just enjoy a good time. I think our local coffee shop is planning on being open, so that would be a great atmosphere where families can go get some coffee or hot chocolate, and wander around the downtown scene in LaFayette. It’s just a good Christmas activity — something to keep our families local and help support the businesses that are in town, but also just provide a fun family Christmas activity in the city of LaFayette for our citizens.”

Milford said her personal passion for the holiday season and the hard work of the Christmas Committee help make Christmas on the Square a fun event for family and friends.

“The LaFayette Christmas committee started back up several years ago, and there’s a really big initiative to try to help improve the downtown Christmas environment, as far as decorations and things,” she said. “I definitely felt like that was something where my volunteer efforts could be well spent, because it was a topic that I’m personally really invested in, because I love Christmas. I’ve always been a huge Christmas person.”
