LANETT — Mayor Jamie Heard read a proclamation honoring Floy and Floyd Aikens, recipients of the Seniors Master’s Games Golden Alumni Award, during the Lanett City Council meeting on Monday evening.

Also recognized were Staley Hill, who received a championship medal for gold in singles dominoes, and Sandra Thornton, who won the mile walk event. Standing before the council, the Aikens were joined by Mayor Heard as he presented their proclamation.

“Floy and Floyd Aikens have proudly represented the Lanett Senior Center at the Master’s Games of Alabama for over 25 years,” Heard said. “Over the years they have not only competed but also built lasting friendships with participants from across the state. The Aikens have shared their knowledge and passion by teaching countless seniors how to play the game. Many of those they mentored became strong competitors — some even going on to beat them in friendly competition.”

Heard went on to commend the couple’s longstanding record of achievement in the games.

“Together they have earned more than 160 medals at both district and state levels — a testament to their skill, dedication and love of the games,” he said. “Mr. Aikens often shares with humor that despite all of his efforts, he has never been able to defeat Ernest Lee. Their sportsmanship, encouragement and joyful competition continue to inspire others. They are already looking forward to next year’s games and remain strong advocates for seniors to live long.”

The mayor also recognized the couple’s personal milestone.

“Beyond their achievements in the games, Floy and Floyd are celebrating 69 years of marriage — a remarkable milestone that mirrors their teamwork, commitment and support for one another,” Heard said. “The Aikens embody the true spirit of the Master’s Games: friendship, competition, and lifelong learning, and are most deserving of the 2024 Hall of Fame Golden Alumni Award.”
