Planned roadwork on SR-1 (US-431) in LaFayette

LAFAYETTE — The Alabama Department of Transportation has begun resurfacing work on US-431 through LaFayette.

The project stretches from just south of State Road 50 to half a mile before County Road 93.

Work began earlier this month and is expected to end sometime in spring 2027.

In addition to the 3.2 miles of resurfacing, this construction also includes pedestrian safety upgrades from 2nd Avenue to Alabama Avenue. That work will address drainage, curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements. 

The project will also implement what is called a “Road Diet” from Alabama Avenue to State Road 77 in downtown LaFayette. This section will change the four-lane undivided roadway to a three-lane roadway. The three-lane section will decrease the speed differentials, and the middle lane will provide a reversible turn lane for left turns in either direction. 

This work will require lane shifts and temporary closures of some on-street parking. 

There will also be daily lane closures of SR-1 within the project limits during the resurfacing phase. 

Motorists should adjust arrival/departure times. Please observe work zone speed limits, work zone signs and use caution in this area.
