The Valley Local launches Grade Incentive Program

CHAMBERS COUNTY — What began as an effort to reward students at three local high schools has quickly blossomed into a broader, communitywide initiative celebrating academic dedication across Chambers County.

The Valley Local recently launched its Grade Incentive Program to motivate students and encourage academic persistence by holding drawings for those earning A’s, B’s and C’s during the current grading period. Thanks to an outpouring of local business support, the organization has expanded its reach beyond its initial blueprint.

Originally planned to cover Valley, LaFayette and Lanett high schools, the high school initiative has now added Beulah High School to its roster. Under the program, two students per grade level at each of the four high schools will be selected in a drawing to receive a $50 Visa gift card.

The initiative has also grown to encompass local elementary and middle schools, where two students per grade will receive free ice cream cards courtesy of a partnership with Chick-fil-A in Valley.

“At The Valley Local, our mission is to support local businesses, schools, students and nonprofits,” said Sara Crutchfield, director of The Valley Local. “We wanted to create a program that encourages students to take pride in their education and recognize the effort they put into their grades. We know students face different challenges, and sometimes a little extra encouragement can go a long way. We wanted to celebrate academic achievement while giving local businesses an opportunity to invest directly in our students.”

Crutchfield said designing the eligibility criteria around passing grades — rather than limiting entries solely to the honor roll — was an intentional decision to reach students at every stage of their academic journey.

“We want students to know their effort matters and their community is cheering them on,” Crutchfield said. “Recognition can give students something positive to work toward and encourage them to keep pushing themselves. Our goal is to celebrate academic success, motivate students to improve and remind them their community sees their potential.”

The Valley Local is coordinating directly with school administrators across the participating campuses to ensure student privacy is protected while verifying eligible report card marks and overseeing the drawings.

Providing Visa gift cards gives high school honorees the independence to spend their earnings where they need them most, while the Chick-fil-A partnership ensures younger grade levels are recognized as well.

Early sponsors who helped get the campaign off the ground include JC Colley Trucking, Valley Vision Center Inc., SouthState Bank and Chick-fil-A Valley, alongside several individual community contributors.

“The response has been incredible,” Crutchfield said. “Seeing so many sponsors step forward has allowed us to reach more schools than we originally planned, demonstrating what can happen when businesses, schools and community organizations work together.”

Crutchfield said investing in students directly impacts the area’s workforce and civic life.

“Our schools and businesses are both important parts of our community, and they need one another,” she said. “When businesses invest in students, they help build relationships with the next generation of workers, leaders, entrepreneurs and community members. It also shows students that people throughout their community care about their success.”

With drawings being scheduled as grade reporting wraps up, organizers are urging additional businesses and residents to get involved as they look toward future grading periods.

“I want people to understand this program is about so much more than a gift card or an ice cream treat,” Crutchfield said. “It is about showing students that their community believes in them, celebrates their accomplishments and wants to see them succeed. At The Valley Local, we believe investing in our students is investing in our community’s future, and we hope this is just the beginning of something that continues to grow for years to come.”
