LANETT — Nuisance properties that the Lanett City Council has completed the abatement process of demolishing were the main subject at the Lanett City Council meeting on Monday, June 15. After a brief public hearing regarding the cost of abatement for multiple properties, Resolution 06-26-03, confirming the report of cost on nuisance abatement for Galvez and Rivera, was read by Council Member for District 4 Charles Bagley.

"Whereas the city of Lanett previously adopted a resolution declaring the hearing at the described property as a public nuisance and after a hearing on the resolution, directed the code enforcement officer to abate the nuisance," he said. "Whereas the hearing was held and the code enforcement officer has filed a report of cost for the work of abatement which now will come before the council for consideration. Therefore upon motions duly made and seconded, it is hereby resolved that the reported cost filed by the code enforcement officer on the abatement. Cost of property belonging to Galvez and Rivera at 305 North twelfth Ave. Lanett, Alabama are found to be reasonable and are hereby approved and confirmed.

"Further resolved that pursuant to 11-40-33 Code of Alabama 1975 a special assessment lien is placed on the hearing at the described property in the amount of $4,250. The description of the property as listed for the tax partial and a certified copy of this resolution fixing the lien shall be recorded in the office of the Judge of Probate in Chambers County, Alabama. Interest at the statutory rate shall be due commenced within thirty days of this date. Adopted this 15th day of June, 2026."

Following that reading, the council voted to adopt the resolution.

Abatement related to the city waiving various taxes on local businesses in order to promote commercial activity, was also discussed by the council.

Chambers County Development Authority Executive Director Chris Busby addressed the council on behalf of a business investing in the expansion of their facility. Busby explained the business was requesting that certain taxes be abated by the city.

"Hester Tag and Label located in the city of Lanett is undergoing expansion," he said. "[It is] the second expansion in the last three years. That is good for this company. They are going to be adding on about 8,000 square feet to their existing facility located on highway 50. It is about a $350,000 capital investment leading to five new jobs. Average wage is around $50,000 annually for these employees."

Subsequently the council approved the abatement of those taxes which were requested.
