Together Again: The LHS Class of 1976

The LaFayette High School Class (LHS) of 1976, the bicentennial class, recently celebrated its 50-year reunion. Many class members met, planned and worked diligently for approximately one year and five months to bring their reunion to fruition from June 5 through June 7.

Day one of the festivities began with a meet and greet at LaFayette High. A program was held in the auditorium with deliveries by Superintendent Sharon Weldon and Principal Christie Johnson preceded by a message from Rev. Ed Vines, the guest speaker.

The class donated two beautiful plants to the school.

Following the message, Principal Johnson took the class on a tour of LHS. Afterwards, the group reconvened in the conference room for light refreshments.

Day two of the festivities included an anniversary banquet and dance held at Robinson Farms/Joy Lake in Buffalo.

The reunion message was delivered by Rev. Gary Dixon, and a special presentation was made by Rev. Cecelia Broome on behalf of Mayor Kenneth Vines.

Mrs. Gail Pennyamon served as the mistress of ceremonies for the event. Former teachers and staff attended the event along with guests of the Spirit of '76 Class.

The concluding reunion activity for the class was worshiping at Mount Zion Baptist Church. The class enjoyed celebrating Dr. Melvin Owens' 34th Pastoral Anniversary.

In retrospect, the reunion activities were enjoyed by all who attended. This golden milestone of 50 years allowed the class to reminisce about days gone by.

The Class of 1976 revisited its class song through its reunion theme, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," while embracing its subtitle, "There's No Place Like Home." This three-day celebration was one of fun, food and fellowship.
