CHAMBERS COUNTY — At the March 18 Chambers County School Board Meeting, the board recognized the LaFayette High School boys’ basketball team for finishing as the 2A State Runner-up. Superintendent Dr. Sharon Weldon and LaFayette boys head coach Chase Lewis recognized the hard work that brought the team success throughout the season. “I watched you guys grow so much throughout the season as a team and in your individual ability to play, and to play with composure,” Weldon said. “It didn’t matter if y’all were way ahead, if it was a tight game or if you knew you had to come back — you played with composure and with focus — and that’s awesome. That’s going to take you a lot further in life than you can imagine, not just on a court, but also just in life — and we’re just super proud of y’all.”
“These guys work hard,” Lewis said. “They’re going to lose eight seniors from this group, eight really good seniors — but great young men. I feel like our seniors are going to be some great young men going into the world, and, just like Dr. Williams spoke about a minute ago, one of the main things that I like to teach them throughout the year is to stay composed. When the house is on fire, we have to be men, because one day you’re going to be a man of your family. And when you’re a man of your family, when mama needs something, when the babies need something, they’re going to look up to you as a dad to provide. They’re going to need to see a strong faith. And that’s what I love about this team, that no matter how hard things got, you guys were able to stay strong, young men, in the midst of a fire, and that’s why they overcame so many obstacles to get yourself into such a great situation. So, thank you guys, and I’m so proud of you.”
Lewis invited seniors Amilleon Huguley and Cameron Thomas to share their excitement from the season. They both thanked the supporters who helped the team in its success. Af- ter both spoke, each varsity player stood and shared their name and plans for next year.
