LANETT — Efforts by the City of Lanett Restoration Committee were recognized during Monday evening’s council meeting, where newly elected District 4 Council Member Charles Brandon Bagley presented the group with the 2025 Governor’s Award.

“On last Thursday the restoration committee was presented a governor’s award from Alabama Power, which is the organization standing for People Against the Litter State,” Bagley said. “As you all know, the restoration committee has been active for the past two years. We have been constantly growing and doing a lot of work for the city to keep things clean. A lot of volunteer hours have gone into it. These are just a few of the great people who participate in this project month in and month out.”

Bagley encouraged residents to join the monthly cleanups.

“If you want to extend any invitation, on every first Saturday of the month we come out here and we pick up paper,” he said. “We meet right here in the parking lot of City Hall to do what we do.”

Later in the meeting, Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain shared details about recent food-assistance efforts organized by the department.

“As a member of law enforcement, our duty is to protect and to serve,” she said. “We certainly don’t stop at responding to emergencies or just enforcing the law. It means stepping up when our community meets a challenge like hunger.”

She explained that officers held a food drive, matching donations to increase the impact. One collection will be delivered to the Church of the Nazarene and another to Mount Hermon for their new food pantry programs.

McCain said officers also stepped up to assist families ahead of Thanksgiving.

“We went through the schools. We spoke to employees, we spoke to the counselors — they chose the families,” she said.
