LANETT — Goodsell Giving sponsored a Pre-Thanksgiving Chili and Soup Lunch Delivery or Pickup for seniors and other at-risk people on Nov. 25.
“I am a lay member of Goodsell United Methodist Church,” said organizer Monica Fannings. “I have been a member all my life. Goodsell Giving was created by me and several other ladies interested in mission work. Thanksgiving is a reminder that some in our community may not be as fortunate as others. Our faith requires us to follow and act on the teachings of Jesus.”
Fannings said the inspiration for the delivery is a reminder of community support and care for those who need it.
“The lunch was a way for us to say we see and care for you,” she said. “We are not trying to replace Thanksgiving — our timing is due to when we can get volunteer support. Many work at schools or have jobs that limit their availability.”
Through social media outreach, Fannings said she and the other ladies of Goodsell Giving were able to determine locals who need extra support and a warm meal.
“Using social media, we advertised the chili and soup lunch and asked people to give us the names of persons we might help,” she said. “Some families called us — others were recommended.”
Through intentional outreach and volunteers working to serve those in need, Fannings said many families and locals were fed a warm meal, and they knew the thought and care of those delivering the food.
“We served over 100 families — every person received a bowl of chili, a bowl of soup, crackers, a cookie, a dessert and a drink,” she said. “We delivered the meals to homes and senior living facilities. One of the joys we get is the warm welcome from seniors, many love receiving a visit and learning they are thought of.”
Fannings said the community response to Goodsell Giving and its events, like the Pre-Thanksgiving Lunch Delivery or Pickup, has been positive and supportive.
“The community in general is very receptive of efforts like this,” she said. “I notice there are a number of churches, food closets and groups doing meals. There are many people in need in Chambers County — working poor, single parents and frail seniors. This is just a small effort to do what we can. Last winter, Goodsell’s youth delivered the meal, and they learned much about the community and serving others.”
