MONTGOMERY — Dr. Stewart Tankersley officially launched his campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama Monday morning, kicking off his statewide effort with a prayer breakfast at his home church in Montgomery attended by more than one hundred supporters, faith leaders and community members.
Dr. Tankersley showcased his candidacy with a record of service in medicine, the military and public life. He is a fourth-generation physician, Colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard and former member of the Alabama Ethics Commission.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was one of the leading opponents of prolonged government lockdown policies and mandates, advocating for a balanced approach that protected public health while preserving individual freedoms, small businesses and local communities.
“The symptoms facing Alabama families cannot be ignored. Higher prices. Tighter budgets. Paychecks are stretched thin,” said Dr. Tankersley. “Families are working harder just trying to keep up, and too often it feels like the government isn’t focused on solving those problems.”
During his remarks, Dr. Tankersley outlined a campaign centered on affordability, accountability and expanding opportunity across the state.
“Everything costs more right now, and when government grows too large or spends too much, those costs don’t disappear. They get passed on to you,” Tankersley said. “Government should not be adding to the pressure. It should help relieve it.”
Dr. Tankersley also emphasized the need to restore accountability in state government and bring a more disciplined, service-oriented approach to leadership.
“I’m not a career politician. I’m a doctor. I’m a veteran. And I’m someone who has spent his life solving problems and serving others,” Tankersley said. “I will approach this job the same way I’ve approached medicine. Listen carefully, make an honest diagnosis, take action and do no harm.”
The campaign will focus on making Alabama more affordable, increasing transparency and accountability in state government, supporting small businesses and expanding opportunity through education and workforce development.
Dr. Tankersley will begin traveling across the state, meeting with voters, local leaders and community organizations.
