LAFAYETTE — Young basketball players from across the area spent the weekend sharpening their skills and building confidence during the free annual LaFayette High School basketball camp, held July 11 and 12 for students entering grades sixth through 12.
Sponsored by More To The Game and instructed by former LaFayette High School standout and overseas professional basketball player Trevond Barnes, the two-day camp focused on much more than just basketball fundamentals. Campers participated in skill development, competitive drills, contests and team-building activities centered around the camp’s message: “Develop. Compete. Elevate.” Along with improving their game, participants were encouraged to have fun, get better and continue to love the game of basketball.
Throughout the weekend, campers received hands-on instruction in ball handling, shooting, defense, footwork, conditioning and game situations while learning the value of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.
Barnes was pleased with this year’s turnout and the attitude displayed by the young athletes.
“This year we had a good group that had a lot of fun and showed a love for the game,” Barnes said. “Everyone tried their best and was really nice and respectful to the coaches and other teammates. We hope that they carry on their work ethic and respectful demeanor past this camp and into life. Camp was a success.”
Barnes also expressed his appreciation to everyone who helped make the event possible.
“We appreciate the support from the parents and administrators of LaFayette High School that allowed this to happen. Thank you to Anthony Kyles for his donated materials and equipment, and we want to give a big thank you to Travis Smith for his generous donations and for helping fund this camp.”
Because of those contributions, every participant and award winner received recovery and nutrition items, including protein powder, protein bars, electrolytes and granola bars to encourage healthy habits and proper recovery after training.
Assisting Barnes throughout the camp were coaches Jamal Sims, Corey Boston and Omar Boston, who worked closely with campers by providing instruction, encouragement and mentorship both on and off the court.
As another successful year comes to a close, the camp continues to make a positive impact by investing in the next generation of student-athletes — teaching not only basketball skills, but also the importance of hard work, respect, character and perseverance.
With smiles, new friendships and improved skills, campers left inspired and already looking forward to next summer.
“It was a lot of fun for everyone involved,” Barnes said. “See you next year.”
