LAFAYETTE — Both of Chambers’ JV basketball teams were invited to compete in the JV State Invitational Tournament hosted by Morgan Academy.
JV Girls
The JV girls faced Southern in the first game. Southern jumped out to an 0-6 lead in the first quarter, but a McKinley Hendricks basket put the JV Lady Rebels on the board. Struggling to get shots to fall over the Cougars’ tall defenders, the JV Lady Rebels trailed 2-19 at the half.
Hendricks pulled a three to start the second half. Maddie Howard knocked down a three as well to start chipping away at the Cougar lead. Kennedy Perry sank her free throws and then hit a basket under the goal to keep the JV Lady Rebels in the game, but Southern came back big with a 15-32 win, eliminating Chambers JV from the tournament.
JV Boys
The JV boys fared better in the tournament making the semi-final game. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start their first game Ft. Dale took over leading 6-10 at the end of the first.
Braxton Terry hit a floater to get the scoring started in the second, but the JV Rebels trailed 14- 19 at the half.
Bentley Terry started off the second half with three. Tounchie Taylor took the lead with a three of his own, and Chambers led 24-22 going into the final period. The Eagles took a lead in the fourth, but a Braxton Terry free throw tied it up at 29 all with a minute left. Cohen Hand gave the Rebels the lead with a pair of free throws. In the bonus, Braxton Terry went to the line twice with 30 seconds left and knocked down several baskets to seal the Rebel win, 33-29.
Advancing to semifinals against Clarke Prep, Cohen Hand found the basket on a fast break to give Chambers an early lead. Bentley Terry knocked down a three to keep the JV Rebels in front 9-6 at the end of the first. After going scoreless for the first three minutes of the second quarter, Chambers built a small lead, but Clarke Prep fought and took a two point lead at the half.
Bentley Terry pulled a three to cut the lead to one in the third, but back-to-back threes by the Gators put Chambers trailing 14-24. Bentley Terry once again hit a three to start the final period of play. Tounchie Taylor hit the basket and one to put Chambers within four. The JV Rebels pulled within two with less than a minute to go, but a quick bucket and free throws sealed the 26- 34 win for the Gators.
Varsity Boys
Earlier in the week, Chambers hosted area opponent, Southern Prep. The two teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, but for every hoop the Rebels put up, the Rangers knocked down a three, causing the Rebels to trail 13-24 at the end of the first.
Southern Prep ran away with the game in the second quarter. Christian Terry finally stopped the bleeding with a three to bring the score to 26-48 at the half.
Christian Terry and Jake Reames both hit three and-one to start the third. Brady Forbus pulled a three to cut the Ranger lead to nine. Southern Prep hit a pair of threes to extend their lead, but Braxton Terry hit a couple of floaters to bring the game to a 54-61 contest at the end of the third. A Hunter Andrews basket brought the game within six with just a few minutes to go, but the Rangers held on, and Chambers fell 69-79.
