LAFAYETTE — LaFayette High School’s softball team dropped both of its games against Bullock County High School at home on April 20, losing 22-14 in the first game and losing the second game 11-5.
Those results drop the Lady Bulldogs (2A) to 0-5 overall on the season, while the Lady Hornets (4A) improve to 2-5.
Across the doubleheader, Kiyanna Williams led the way for LHS with a triple and a single that drove in three runs while scoring three runs herself. Makayla Mayfield finished with an RBI single while scoring twice, and Carly Laborde also tallied an RBI single and scored two runs for the Lady Bulldogs.
Game 1
After the first inning, LHS found itself in a 9-0 hole after a massive top of the first inning by BCHS, but answered with nine runs of its own in the bottom half.
A string of wild pitches brought home numerous runs before Mayfield lined a single down the left-field line to score Deazia Avery. A bases-loaded walk pushed another run across, and a wild pitch scored another before Kiyanna Williams capped the frame with a triple deep into center field, driving in CJ Walton and Kacey Green.
With the Lady Bulldogs ahead 10-9 going into the second inning, the Lady Hornets again pulled away again in the top of the frame. This time it was 13 runs during a grueling at-bat that effectively put the game out of reach.
However, LHS refused to quit and added four in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Laborde’s ground-ball single near third base that scored Caniya Williams.
Not long after, the head umpire decided to call the first game after the second inning ended since it had already lasted nearly two hours.
Game 2
Now playing as the away team in the second game, the Lady Bulldogs struck first with three runs in the top of the first on a pair of bases-loaded walks and an RBI groundout by Avery that scored Kiyanna Williams.
In their first at-bat of the game, BCHS scored just two runs, giving LHS a glimmer of hope.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead with two more runs in the top of the second when Kiyanna Williams singled near the shortstop to plate Walton and Savannah Luse grounded out to drive in Green.
However, the Lady Hornets tallied nine runs in the bottom of the second to pull away.
With the sun beginning to set, the head umpire again called the game early, this time before LHS even recorded a third out to officially end the second inning.
