LAFAYETTE — LaFayette locals and visitors may notice a patriotic addition to the Square. LaFayette Main Street has added patriotic pole banner flags downtown to celebrate the upcoming national holidays.
“This initiative, through LaFayette Main Street, was to add patriotic banners to celebrate our community,” said LaFayette Main Street Executive Director DeAnna Hand. “These flags allowed us to add vibrant colors and bold messages to our historic downtown streetscape, and this is a part of our revitalization efforts downtown and an impactful way to really enhance the visual appeal of our city.”
Hand said these banners are a step towards a rotation of seasonal banners, to continue to cultivate a festive and welcoming atmosphere on the Square.
“These will replace the LaFayette historic banners that are down, and we hope to continue to rotate out these pole banners for different celebrations or seasons,” she said. “So these patriotic pole banner flags were designed and purchaced with grant funds to replace or add to what we currently have on the poles, these will be used around Memorial Day, the 4th of July and the America's 250th celebration this year.”
With the 250th anniversary of America, Hand said she is excited to have the banners downtown for the celebration. With the banners illustrated with patriotic themes, but not attached to a specific holiday or event, Hand said they can be reused for future events and celebrations in LaFayette.
“It shows our patriotism to America, and we just want to celebrate that,” she said. “They will be placed throughout downtown and really highlight and add vibrancy to our historical street.”
Through community collaboration, Hand said the patriotic pole banner flags are the result of locals who are passionate about LaFayette.
“The design committee worked hard to create this banner and voted on this design,” she said. “The committee worked on this as a group effort, and it consists of different members of our community. Dr. Butch Busby was really the backbone of this project, and he has been phenomenal as our design committee chair.”
Hand said the patriotic pole flag banners were purchased through a grant from the Coosa Valley Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) awarded to LaFayette Main Street in 2025.
“With the grants that we apply for, our efforts really are to continue to plan, promote and implement preservation, beautification and placemaking,” she said. “And it really creates that warm downtown environment that shows the character and feel of what we want to showcase here in LaFayette.”
