LAFAYETTE — Community leaders and local officials gath- ered Monday morning at the Alfa building in LaFayette to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The event, organized by LaFayette Main Street, featured lunch catered by Krave Korner, an inspirational song performed by Ebony Askew and an original poem recited by Sandra Holloway. LaFayette Main Street Executive Director Deanna Hand intro- duced Main Street representative Maci Gregory, who welcomed those in attendance.

“It is my honor and joy to welcome you to LaFayette Main Street’s second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration,” Gregory said. “Today is a day when we pause to remember not only the man, but the movement that he inspired. Today we gather as a community to reflect on Dr. King’s dream — a dream rooted in justice, equality and the unwavering belief that love is stronger than hate.”

Gregory said she could see that spirit reflected throughout the room and across the community, adding that she had personally experienced that love through the work of LaFayette Main Street representative Faye Seroyer, who played a key role in organizing the event.

“Please give her a round of applause for all of the hard work and thoughtfulness that she has put into this wonderful event,” Gregory said.

City of LaFayette Mayor Kenneth Vines also addressed attendees, expressing appreciation for the program and the day’s speaker.

“To this great man of God, Reverend Winston, I am sure that I will be spiritually fed this morning hearing the word from you,” Vines said. “I was at a previous event and heard Reverend Free- man. He laid the foundation, so I know that you are going to finish building the house this morning. Thank you for accepting this invitation to come to the city of LaFayette.”
