LANETT — Seniors who recently participated in the Masters Games of Alabama were recognized during Monday evening’s Lanett City Council meeting.
Lanett Senior Center Manager Sandra Thornton and several participants attended the meeting, where District 4 Council Member Charles Bagley read a proclamation honoring their participation and accomplishments.
“Whereas the Masters Games of Alabama is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active individuals ages 50 and older through social, mental and physical activities. And whereas the games were developed in Oxford, Alabama, in 1989 to provide adults an opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle by participating in a variety of events. While the games provide an Olympic type atmosphere, the focus is not on competition but fun and fellowship. Each year there are over 2,600 and 800 participants from across the state. And whereas the City of Lanett was fortunate enough to have seniors travel to Trussville, Alabama, to participate in the Masters Games. Several seniors received medals.”
Lanett resident and Masters Games medalist Fannie Spence then addressed the council, expressing her appreciation to the city and those who accompanied the seniors to Trussville.
“I want to thank the city for sending us to Trussville,” Spence said. “Sandra and Willy took very good care of us. [With me] being 90 years old, he had to hold me by my hand all the way up. I love both of them for that. I thank them and the city, especially Mayor Heard. I came that Friday to thank him, and he had gone to get a haircut. So, now we know he gets his hair cut on Fridays.”
Thornton also congratulated the seniors on their accomplishments, recognizing several medal winners.
“I also want to congratulate Terry Hayes, [who] is not here,” Thornton said. “She was a gold winner. Neva won hers in softball throw, walking a mile and frisbee. Fannie won hers in softball throw, walking and cornhole throw. She actually got more medals than any of us. She said that this would be her last year going but she is ready for next year because she had so much fun and that really made our day.”
In other business, the council:
Approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Local Government Services LLC for electric pole maintenance advisory services related to negotiations over fees paid to the city by cable providers for the use of utility poles.
Approved Resolution 10-26-07, concerning a sales tax rebate for the promotion of development.
Heard from Chambers County Development Authority Executive Director Chris Busby about the anticipated opening of a new cafe, Brews and Moos, on Broad Avenue in Lanett in the coming weeks.
Received an update from Circle of Care Executive Director Kea Costley on the progress of the Hope Haven program, which supports single mothers in Chambers County.
