VALLEY — The Valley City Council on Oct. 12 rezoned the property at 1646 River Road from a C-3 local business district to an R-2 medium-density residential district. Planning and Development Director Reid Riley explained the need for the rezoning to the council during a public hearing.

“This has been a residential house,” Riley said. “It became a commercial residence due to the stores by the four-way stop in Riverview that surround it. The planning commission has approved and recommended we change it to residential zoning because the stores around it are no longer in operation, and it would help the owner’s ability to sell it at this point as a residential property.”

Later in the meeting, City Clerk Kathy Snowden read the rezoning amendment for 1646 River Road.

“Be it ordained by the City Council of Valley, Alabama, that Ordinance 99-07, as previously amended, is hereby further amended as follows,” Snowden read aloud. “Zoning: the property at 1646 River Road is rezoned to R-2 medium-density residential district classification. Section 2, effective date: This order shall take effect from the date of this passing by the City Council and its publication of posting as required by law.”

The council unanimously approved the amendment to rezone that property.

In other business, the council:

• Approved an alcohol license for the Pasta Bella restaurant, formerly known as Milano’s.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included weed liens on two properties as well as declaring a police department radio surplus.

• Approved a franchise agreement with the East Alabama Water, Sewer and Fire Protection District.

•  Approved annexation of property owned by Johnny Yates.
