Looking Around LaFayette | July 30,2025
Election time is drawing near
OPINION — Dear readers, LaFayette has had elections since 1836, when it was incorporated and local government was established. The first mayor was Jon H. McCarty, and the first council members were elected alongside the mayor. It is interesting to note that the early officials focused on infrastructure and community services. In 2025, we are still talking about infrastructure. Remember we need to take seriously who we vote for. We want officials who take the needs of this community seriously.
August is also the time for many back-to-school events. Adrian Holloway of P.H.Y.R.E. works hard each year to make its event a success for children. There will be many items for them to start the year, such as note paper, pens, books, book bags, etc. Adrian said she is grateful to all those people who have donated to this special event. I am happy to say the Chamber Wellness and Health Center, in LaFayette, will have a table at the Bash for parents to find out what health services are available free of charge for their families. The event will be held on Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the LaFayette High School band field.
Speaking of Adrian, I recently met a charming young man at Lowe’s Pharmacy. It can be a good place to meet people — some you might know and some you get to know. Anyhow, I met Adrian’s son Qua Bailey. I find it very easy to stop and greet another person when I am out and about. It doesn’t matter the age they are, people like smiles, and a “How are you doing?”. There are times a person will share something that is bothering them. Qua and I had a very pleasant chat which was easy when he found out I am a friend of his mom and grandmother, Cindy Holloway. It is always special to have friends, then get to know their children. I wish Qua much success in his life.
Lemonade on a hot day tastes so refreshing. The Mary Joy Moosman Foundation fundraiser event held this past Saturday at the Venue was successful. The event was dedicated to the loving memory of Mary Joy who tragically passed away following a car accident on May 16, 2024. She was known for spreading joy and generosity and was very active in her church. Two of her good friends from the church took part in the event. I spent a couple hours there and believe me when I say there was never a let up of people stopping for a lemonade. It seemed that every person I talked to commented on what a great idea this fundraiser was for this young girl. A big thank you to Roxanne and Luis, owners of the Mexican restaurant, and the team who hosted the lemonade stand.
The other day I visited the new home décor shop and what a treat. Once I oohed and aahed over all the beautiful pieces, I met the owner Djuna Sanders and found out more about the Sparrow Home Décor shop. Djuna doesn’t live in LaFayette currently. She has traveled a great deal being married to a military man. She has two adult sons and lives in Opelika. Djuna has both new and restored furniture, and many beautiful accessories. I guarantee when you visit, you will see something that you know will look great in your home.
If you are doing some redecorating or moving into a new home, I encourage you to visit Sparrow’s Home Décor. Djuna will give you some good decorating tips. She is closed on Sunday and Monday with various hours on other days. She advises calling to check on time, at (256) 998-8725. Be sure to stop, look and welcome her. You just might find something you have to have in your house.
The summer Food Truck Festival is coming on Aug. 8, and you don’t want to miss the introduction of the football team. I sure don’t want to miss the high school band. Hope you will stop at the Wellness Health Center table and say hello. We will have information on all the free services offered at the center. Health is important and we want to help you all be healthy.
Before I sign off, I want to say it was a pleasure meeting Caroline and Henry Bailey in the parking lot at Renfroe’s, and for a change she called out to me from the car. She had a big smile and wanted to say “Hello, have a nice day.” Henry came out of the store, and we greeted each other. That is what I want to see happening in LaFayette. I love LaFayette and love the people who live here.
It was another busy week for me and I love it. I enjoy “my looking around” LaFayette and I can’t wait for Jack’s renovation completeness. It looks awesome outside of the building.
Until next time, keep smiling, showing kindness to all.
Peace, love and joy, Ms. Laura.
