National Night Out returns to Lanett Aug. 4

LANETT — Chambers County residents are invited to an evening of free food, live entertainment and community connection as the City of Lanett Police Department hosts National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. ET on the playground area across from W.O. Lance Elementary School, located at 200 S. 8th Ave. in Lanett.
Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain said the event aims to bring local law enforcement and first responders together with the families they serve.
“We’re going to have the fire departments and all aspects of law enforcement in Chambers County,” McCain said. “We’ll have Touch-a-Truck, free food and refreshments sponsored by the Lanett Police Department, bouncy houses, a dunking booth and live music.”
McCain also said the event will feature school supplies giveaways to help prepare students for the upcoming school year.
“We’ll have some school supplies to give away,” she said. “A lot of community organizations are sponsoring their own booths and giving away prizes, too. We have several $100 gift cards [to give away]. There will be door prizes for Academy Sports + Outdoors so students can get shoes, clothes or whatever they need for school.”
This is LPD’s second year hosting National Night Out, and McCain said the department received the Rookie Award last year after its inaugural event.
“[Last year] was a blast,” she said. “We hope to bring the community together with the police departments and just make sure everybody knows who we are and what we do for the community.”
McCain said her favorite part of the night is seeing the children have fun and getting to take home school supplies.
“[My favorite part is] just being able to see a kid who maybe can’t buy the things they need for school pick out what they want, like the color book bag they want,” she said. “The school supplies available are for all ages. So if they go to elementary school or if they go to high school, we’ll add all that.”
