Rebels come up short against Edgewood Wildcats

LAFAYETTE — Chambers Academy basketball teams faced a tough night against Edgewood, with several close contests highlighting the evening. While the JV boys earned a road victory, the JV girls and both varsity squads battled through competitive games that ultimately ended in narrow losses.

JV Girls

Edgewood started the game with an 9-0 lead, but two Kennedy Perry baskets under the goal kept the game at 12-6 at the end of the first. Chambers had trouble getting shots off in the second and trailed 18-8 at the half.

McKinley Hendricks knocked down back-to-back threes to cut the lead to four, but the JV Lady Rebels trailed 22-16 going into the final period of play. Chambers worked the ball inside to Addison Tenpenny to once again bring the game within four, but they ultimately fell 28-20.

JV Boys

The JV Rebels and Wildcats traded baskets to start the game, but Chambers jumped out to a commanding 14-7 lead at the end of the first. Edgewood started chipping away at the Rebel lead, but a couple of fast breaks put the game at 24-15 at the half.

Braxton Terry and Caleb Caulfield got the second half started with baskets in the paint. Cooper Earl added a three pointer to give Chambers a 37-21 lead at the end of the third, and the JV Rebels rolled to a 39-29 victory.

Varsity Girls

After a close game in the first couple of minutes, Edgewood took a 17-7 lead at the end of the first. Back-to-Back threes by Blakely Allen followed by a quick basket from Emmalee Jackson helped the Lady Rebels pull within three, but Edgewood got hot again taking a 26-17 lead at the half.

A three pointer by Trenise Tigner and two drives for buckets by Madison Stanford put the Lady Rebels back within three. MeLeah Tigner pulled a three, and Madison Stanford hit a bucket to take a 35-34 lead at the end of the third. Edgewood took back over the lead to start the fourth, but Stanford tied it back up. A Samantha Lovelace three gave Chambers a one point lead with a little over a minute to go, but Edgewood hit a pair of free throws to take the lead with eight seconds to go. Chambers missed the buzzer beater and fell 46-45.

Varsity Boys

Christian Terry, Bryce Modeling and Hunter Andrews all put up baskets to give Chambers a quick lead. Jake Reames hit a three to take a 19-11 lead at the end of the first. Edgewood came back with a second quarter surge and tied it up at 31. Jake Reames connected on a long pass and found Cohan McDonald under the goal to give Chambers a 33-31 lead at the half.

Chambers and Edgewood traded baskets throughout the third quarter. Edgewood hit a buzzer beater to take a 49-48 lead going into the final period of play. Reames hit another three to once again tie up the game in the fourth. Chambers went cold with two minutes left and couldn’t get shots to fall. Edgewood jumped out to a seven point lead with a minute and a half to go and the Rebels ran out time losing 64-57.
