LAFAYETTE — Now well into the season, Chambers Academy faced another worthy opponent in Edgewood Academy, winners of seven Alabama Independent School Association football championships since 2008.
That tough test never truly materialized as the No. 2- ranked Rebels (6-1) raced out to an early lead and rolled to a 51-0 road win over the No. 9 Wildcats (4-3) at Edgewood Stadium on Oct. 1.
After spending weeks talking about how his team needed to play more disciplined and find its identity, Chambers head coach Jason Allen said his team came out swinging and refused to let up during the blowout.
“This was another good win for our team. We came out hot and didn’t slow down,” Allen said.
Christian Terry led the Rebels with three touchdowns and 84 yards on eight carries, while Braxton Terry completed 4 of 6 passes for 126 yards and two TDs and added 31 yards on his only carry.
Aiden Yerta ran for 63 yards and a TD on seven carries, and Trey Tigner scored on his lone carry, a 41-yard run. Bryce Modling caught a 44-yard TD pass, Hunter Andrews had a 36-yard TD catch and Aiden Tilley had a 35-yard reception.
On defense, Tucker Thrower led the way with five tackles and two tackles for loss, and A.J. Noles had three tackles and two tackles for loss.
Christian Terry got things rolling on the opening drive with a 44-yard pickup and punched it in on a 6-yard TD run before the Wildcats managed just 2 yards on their first series.
Back on offense, Chambers opened with a 35-yard pass from Braxton Terry to Tilley. Braxton Terry then found Andrews on his way to the end zone for another score, and Yerta punched in the two-point conversion to put the Rebels up 14-0.
Thrower, Elliott and Cooper Earl led the Chambers defense, which held Edgewood to negative yardage on the next drive.
“The defense asserted its dominance and is really playing well against the run and pass,” Allen said. “We were able to get Brody Morand for the first time this year after breaking his collarbone in preseason. I’m really excited about what he brings to our team on the defensive side.”
A Braxton Terry pass to Fuller for a first down got the next Rebels drive off to a good start. Braxton Terry then picked up 31 yards on a keeper, running inside the 10 yard line, and Christian Terry scored the TD. Cohan McDonald’s PAT pushed the Chambers lead to 21-0.
After the defense forced another three-and-out, Yerta ran 42 yards on the first play of the drive and then punched in the TD. McDonald added the extra point, and the Rebels led 28-0 to start the second quarter.
Christian Terry scored the next Chambers TD. The two-point attempt failed, but the Rebels were up 34-0.
Modling broke off a 50-yard return on the next Wildcats punt, and the drive ended with a McDonald field goal that gave Chambers a 37-0 halftime lead.
“Special teams were better, especially our kickoff team,” Allen said.
The Rebels added two more scores in the second half. Braxton Terry hit Modling on a slant for a 44-yard TD, and Tigner added a 41-yard TD run. McDonald converted both extra points to seal the 51-0 win.
“Offensively, other than one drive, I thought we were really efficient and executed well in the passing game,” Allen said. “[But] we’re still missing some assignments up front. We have to get that corrected.”
Chambers hits the road again this week to face No. 3 Lowndes Academy (4-2) on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. Lowndes is coming off a 44-0 road loss to No. 5 Abbeville Christian Academy (5-2) on Oct. 2.
“They’re a proud program with outstanding coaching that played us in the state championship game last year,” Allen said of Lowndes. “We’ll have to be ready to play as they’ll be excited to play us.”
