LANETT — Council Member for District 2 Krisse Story read a proclamation recognizing Older Americans Month at the Lanett City Council meeting on Monday, May 19. Story was joined by Lanett Senior Center Manager Sandra Thornton along with senior citizen members of Lanett at the front of the chamber for the reading of the proclamation.
"Whereas Alabama includes a growing number of older Americans who enrich our communities through their diverse life experiences," she said. "And whereas the city of Lanett is committed to strengthening our community by connecting with and supporting older adults, their families and caregivers and acknowledging their many valuable contributions to society. And whereas the city of Lanett recognizes the importance of bringing together all generations and engaging in activities that promote physical, mental and emotional well being for the benefit of all. And whereas the city of Lanett can enhance the lives of older citizens in our community by promoting home and community based services that support independent living, involving older adults in community events and other activities as well as providing opportunities for older adults to work, volunteer, learn and mentor."
Following the reading of that proclamation, Story was joined by the Lanett High School Class of 2026 valedictorian Zaniah Davidson and salutatorian Armani Langdon for the presentation of commemorative plaques recognizing their outstanding scholastic accomplishments as graduating seniors. Story remarked upon their academic success in achieving these titles.
"I want to say that these are my babies," she said. "I taught them both and I am sure that they will let you know that I was their favorite teacher ever. I am so proud of you ladies. Both of the plaques say the same thing. The city of Lanett mayor and council congratulates Zaniah Davidson and Armani Langdon. Lanett High School, Armani is our salutatorian and Zaniah is our valedictorian. We are extremely proud of you both."
Council Member for District 4 Charles Bagley presented commemorative plaques to Mr. Lanett High School Riontae Zeigler and Miss Lanett High School Zaniah Davidson.
Later in the meeting, Council Member for District 1 Denise Zachery made a statement regarding the shooting death of local resident Tommy Boyd Jr. last week which occurred in her district.
"I do have this on my heart tonight because we lost another life in the city of Lanett," she said. "A young man lost his life. From what I have been told, [he was] a very likable person who never harmed anybody. So my prayers go out to the entire Boyd family and also the city of Lanett because this happened in our city. I am praying that justice will be done. That the mayor, chief of police and detectives bring justice to this family."
