LAFAYETTE — The Sparrow Home Decor recently opened in LaFayette and provides a local location for community members to purchase unique home decorations and furniture.

“I look at my store the way I look at my home, and if I wouldn’t buy it and put it in my home, I wouldn’t ask someone else to purchase it and put it in theirs,” said Owner and Operator Djuna Sanders. “I look for pieces that are unique, and I try to have a little something for everybody’s taste, whether it’s for children, men, college students or ladies in my age range.”

Sanders said The Sparrow Home Decor is the result of a dream she has had for over a decade.

“I had this dream probably about 15 years ago, to start my own little home decor business,” she said. “At that particular time, I had two sons, and I was a stay-at-home mom, so I would just stay home and hone my craft. I watched a lot of HGTV and figured out what my style is and what I have a passion for.”

Since opening in July, Sanders said she is excited about her business and what it will provide for the community.

“I started searching for a building to start my business, felt led to come to Lafayette and an opportunity came available for me to have a building here,” she said. “I’ve been here since July 21, and my goal is to serve the community by providing reloved furniture and all decor.”

When acquiring the decor she sells, Sanders said she aims to cater to a variety of styles and customers.

“I wouldn’t say I have a particular style that I stick to,” she said. “I just try to serve the community based on their needs, and I haven’t had a lot of feedback because I just opened, so I just try to get what customers are interested in. Sometimes I restore furniture pieces. I just try to find things that are odd and different.”

Sanders explained she sees a quality difference in older furniture compared to what is produced now, which is why she chooses to sell second hand furniture.

“Furniture, in my opinion, is not made as well as it used to be,” she said. “So most of the things that I purchase and restore are quality, solid pieces that will last and that you could perhaps pass down. I like the quality of old furniture compared to things that are new, and they’re one of a kind. It’s not something that you can walk into everybody’s home and find. You are probably going to be the only one who has this item.”

With many spending a lot of time at home, Sanders said that she wants her shop to become a place where community members can gather and spend time together.

“I would love for this to be not just a place where people come to shop, but also a place they can come if they just want to hang out,” she said. “Sometimes people just want somewhere to go, and I want to be that welcoming place. I want them to feel like they can come in and there’s no pressure to come in and buy things. Some people don’t have family in the area, and they need community and that’s what I would want to provide. You can’t get from a big box store.”

Sanders said she hopes her space uplifts the community and her customers. For more information, visit @Sparrowhomedecor1 on Instagram or explore the shop at 8 First St. SE in LaFayette.

“The name of my store is Sparrow Home Decor, and that name was chosen because there’s a scripture that says, ‘The sparrows have found a home in the Lord,’” she said. “And that’s the feeling and the thought behind the shop. There are a lot of lonely people, and there are a lot of people who need support and encouragement.”
